THE OILY MARK

And of Asher he said: “Asher is most blessed of sons; Let him be favored by his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil. Your sandals shall be iron and bronze; As your days, so shall your strength be. Deuteronomy 33:24,25

Recently I came across this Scripture of Moses’ blessing over the tribe of Asher and I decided I would claim his blessing over my life. Now Asher was one of the twelve sons of Jacob and his mom was Zilpah, Leah’s maid… Really when you talk about the sons of Jacob- Judah, Joseph, or Benjamin may come to mind, but never Asher… He was not one of the more notable sons. There isn’t much to say about him… after all he was the maids son and the way his father received his fortune, well lets just say there is a story behind that one. …

But Asher means “Happy” and from what we can learn from the above Scripture he was blessed, yes blessed indeed. The Bible says, ”that Asher was most blessed of sons…” In the King James version it says, “Let Asher be blessed with children.” So here is the first of the “four-part blessing” that he received… He was to be fruitful. I don’t know about you but I want my house not only filled with my own children and my children’s children, I also want my home to be filled with spiritual children as well, “for he who wins souls is wise.” And secondly, he was favored. How many want to be surrounded by favor in every area of their lives? I know I do. And third, “his sandals shall be iron and bronze, as your days, so shall your strength be.” Charles Spurgeon writes about this part, “The strength of thy old age shall be like that of thy youth; thou shalt not feel a decay, but shalt renew thy youth; as if not thy shoes only, but thy bones, were iron and brass.’’ What this is saying is when I get old, I will feel like I did when I was young, just like iron shoes will not wear out , I won’t wear out but will be strong enough to accomplish His plan for my life. Now that is a BLESSING we all would like to claim…

But the part I really like is when it says “and let him dip his foot in oil..” Oh to dip my foot in oil, so wherever I go I leave an oily mark. Everywhere I go, to leave the mark of the anointing of God. I heard it once said, “what a tragedy it would be to live ones life, yet having died, not to have made a difference.” Many strive hard to leave some kind of legacy upon this earth, but in all reality their striving is in vain, for in a few short years no matter how hard he tries, he soon will be forgotten. But if you are wise, your highest goal should be, and what will make you eternally satisfied and happy, is to live your life so saturated with oil received from heaven, that the legacy you leave will be a heavenly one. I do not know about you but I want to leave a mark on this generation. But let it not be my mark, but the mark of the Holy Spirit. The only way to accomplish this high calling of God is to keep my branch so connected to the Vine that His sap oozes out of me. I want to be so connected to the “TWO OILY ONES” standing on the right and left of the Father in heaven, that the continuous, endless supply of oil from heaven permeates, penetrates and pervades every fiber of my being, and so much so that everywhere I walk I can’t help but leave a puddle of oil… .

Oh to be like Asher , happy, blessed among sons, fruitful, surrounded with favor and that my strength in my old age will be like my youth. But most of all, let me dip my foot in oil, but not just my foot Lord, but every part of me saturated in that oily substance and supply that never runs dry.

Recently , I taught a Bible Study on the story of the widow of Nain in Luke 7:11-17. Nain , which means beauty, was about 25 miles from Capernaum. Perhaps years before the woman had lost her husband and on this particular day she would bury her only son. She and a band of mourners would walk down the road to the rock hewned burial caves, while at the same time Jesus, His disciples and a large crowd with Him just happened to be passing by. The widow of Nain is just one of the nameless, faceless women of the Bible. She is a woman perhaps like you at times overcome with devastation, loss and despair. Her last precious possession now gone, her hope for the future now lost in a sea of uncertainty…. She isn’t looking for a Savior, she isn’t looking for a miracle- those days are past… But the Bible says, but yet….. “when the LORD saw her, He had compassion on her.” She wasn’t looking for Him but HE was looking for her. On that day the procession of death intersected with the procession of life and everything changed. When the two collided, the woman’s life would never be the same. Not only was the dead son brought back to life, but her hope was restored. Maybe you need a divine intersection, a divine intervention…. Maybe you today have lost all hope, but the story of this woman says to you HE SEE’S YOU!!!!! He is concerned about the things that concern you. He still is the God of the impossible. Those things that you thought died and all hope of restoration has past, He can shake the ground once more and cause dead things to come alive again.

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry. Ps. 34:15

“now it is high time to awake out of sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11

There is nothing I love to do more than to go to church on Sunday morning and then to come home, to sit on my back porch and take an afternoon nap. With the winter fast closing and the spring here, the cool crisp breeze and a light blanket is all I need to fall fast asleep. And really there is nothing wrong with physical sleep, we all need our rest. But if we were honest with ourselves as women, many of us are asleep or half-asleep at best.

Oh yes, we busy ourselves with the kids, work and the cooking and cleaning. Yet no man lives to himself or was ever meant to. But somehow we have drawn a small circle around our lives and we have allowed ourselves to be lulled asleep with the mundane things of this world. The sins and sorrows of those around us abound yet it has not caused us any sleepless nights. “You have been eating the fat and drinking the sweet, but have you fed the hungry? Have you brought in the wandering?”

Sisters the multitudes are perishing, shall we not give them something to eat?…. We need a “GREAT AWAKENING” in our personal lives- for our salvation is nearer than when we first believed!

Wake Up! Wake Up!

There is a crown to receive, a feast to partake of and a King to please.
